Beards and distance running

A confession: I have a crappy beard.

I have tried a few times and it is really just not attractive. In medicine, beards seem to be making a bit of a resurgence and I am seeing them somewhat more frequently over the past couple of years, even here in Florida. Distance runners as well, seem to go through phases of enjoying the growth of facial hair. Mario at Running.competitor.com noted recently that Ryan Hall has adopted the fashion, prompting Mario to review some of the great running beards of the past.

My favorite?

Additional note: The Art of Manliness just spent some time discussing beards and their impact on one's career/professionalism.

  1. I was at the USATF Half-Marathon Championship on Saturday morning. Ryan Hall had shaved his beard overnight in preparation for the race, which makes sense to me as wearing same would have slightly increased his aerodynamic drag (my video from the race if interested is at http://bit.ly/hR1FCX).
